Beans - Brazilian Style


Soak 2 cups of dried beans in water for a few hours. Drain off water. Add fresh water to the beans (about 5 cups) and place on burner to boil slowly. Add chopped onion, a small piece of bacon and one bay leaf. Allow to boil until the beans are softened. Add more water if necessary.
When the beans are soft, add garlic salt and stir, squashing some of the beans to thicken the gravy. Allow to cook until the gravy is thick. Serve with rice, stir-fried leaves, cream of squash, and a small steak or hamburger (without bread), two fried eggs, or "picadinho".
