Jessica and Jaqueline entered Casa LIMIAR in March, 1995. Jessica
was 20 months old and had malnutrition. Jaqueline was 12 months old and
could not sit up without being propped up. For the time they were there,
the wonderful LIMIAR staff spent extra
time on these girls' development.
Flash forward to June, 2003. Based on their excellent pre-trial scores both Jessica and Jaqueline were two of the three girls selected to Noftingham Elementary School in the 24th Annual Fitness Finals in Arlington County. They competed against athletes in grades 3-5 from 20 other elementary schools. The events were 600 yard run, 50 yard dash, shuttle run, pullups, and broad jump. They both won ribbons in all the events. They placed from second through sixth place in the events. This means that they are among the top athletes in a town of 190,000 people. Jaqueline, 9, third grade, did especially well. She got two 2nd places, one third, and two fourth places, all the while biting her fingernails. Her PE teacher told her that the butterflies in her stomach would help her fly. Jessica, 10, 5th grade, is a natural athlete, but notoriously uncompetitive During the last basketball season, we told Jessica we would pay her $10 she fouled somebody. She did, but not until the last two minutes of the last game. However, this was her third time competing in the Arlington Fitness Finals. We are already encouraging the girls to think "Sports Scholarship". We are so proud of both these girls. And a thousand thanks to LIMIAR to, helping them get their start! Janey, wife to Don, mom to Edson, 13, Jessica, 10, Jaqueline, 9, and Tommy 7; housemate to Petey the dog, two cats, 2 frogs and 4 anoles. |
