I think one of the best things about adopting an older child is that they have the intellectual capacity to understand where they have been and where they are going. This is a great help for older kids, when they are moved to a new country.

Also, I may be wrong, but they often seem to be able to appreciate things a little more than some American kids who are available for adoption, because they have been given so little in their young lives.

For older parents, like us, we wanted to give love and a family to another child, but could not imagine starting all over from the ´beginning´. So an older child worked for us. To fill our need, as well as the need of a young person. We has already had the privilege of adopting two infants...so it all worked well for us.

As a former social worker, I know the great fear many have with the idea of adopting teens or older kids. I can only say, for us it has been a very fulfilling experience.
